Played “Skelly” from 1951 to 1954 in the Amsterdam Houses on Amsterdam Avenue around 62nd street. I started at 4 years old and my Dad filled the bottle caps for me with wax. It was a way of life. I never left the house without a cap in my pocket. Moved to New Jersey in ’54 and it was hard to keep up the tradition. Taught my daughter…and even my niece and nephew in Nicaragua in the 80’s. During the height of Covid I drew a box and played solo on my patio here in New Mexico. Great memories. Great game!

Grew up at 90th St. and Columbus Ave. Spent a lot of time playing what we called Skullsey. Familiar with your old neighborhood…started at Power Memorial HS at 61st and Amsterdam in ’58!
Thats right in my neck of the woods….
Power Memorial, alma mater of Lew Alcindor, much better known as Kareem Abdul Jabbar. I left the Amsterdam Projects at age 8 in 1954. Played Skelzy until the bicycle propelled ice cream cart came. W. 63rd Street was re-named Thelonius Monk Blvd. in honor of the musician who had lived there. Great memories of Manhattan at a time when Lincoln Center was just a concept!
Yes…. thats OLD SKOOL
I also remember stick ball….a mop handle, some black tape and a pink Spaulding rubber ball. We would play in the street with a manhole cover as second base. Whenever you heard a window break, you never saw 8-10 guys disappear so fast!!! Great memories.
it was an amazing time to be a child…. street play was where families came together.
